Physical and Chemical Properties
Acetaldehyde is a colorless, transparent, pungent, volatile, and flammable liquid at room temperature and pressure. Acetaldehyde is not only soluble in water, but also miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, benzene, gasoline, and toluene in any proportion.

Application

1. 
   In organic synthesis, acetaldehyde is a dicarbon reagent and electrophilic reagent, a synthon of CH3CH(OH), and is prochiral. It condenses with formaldehyde to form pentaerythritol C(CH2OH)4, and reacts with Grignard reagents and organolithium reagents to form alcohols.
2. 
   In the Strecker amino acid synthesis, acetaldehyde is condensed with cyanide ions and ammonia and hydrolyzed to synthesize alanine.
3. 
   Acetaldehyde can be used to make acetic acid, ethanol, and ethyl acetate. The pesticide DDT is synthesized using acetaldehyde as a raw material.
4. 
   It can be used to mix fruit essences such as tangerine, orange, apple, apricot, strawberry, etc. It can also be used in wine essences such as wine, rum, whiskey, etc.

Storage
Acetaldehyde should be stored in pressure-resistant glass bottles or metal drums. Containers must be stored in a well-ventilated, air-conditioned warehouse constructed of non-combustible materials, away from sources of fire and heat, and protected from direct sunlight. They should be stored separately from oxidants, strong bases, ammonia, amines, halogens, alcohols, ketones, phenols, and other substances that burn in contact with water. Packaging must be securely sealed and should not be stored for extended periods. Handle with care during handling.
