Physical and Chemical Properties
Acetic anhydride, or ethanoic anhydride, is the chemical compound with the formula (CH3CO)2O. Commonly abbreviated Ac2O, it is the simplest isolable anhydride of a carboxylic acid and is widely used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is a colorless liquid that smells strongly of acetic acid, which is formed by its reaction with moisture in the air.

Application
1:Acetic anhydride is an important acetylation reagent used in the production of cellulose acetate, acetic acid plastics, and non combustible film;

2:Used in the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture synthetic antibiotics such as levofloxacin, dibazol, caffeine, aspirin, sulfonamide drugs, etc;

3:Mainly used in the dye industry to produce dispersed dark blue HCL, dispersed bright red S-SWEL, dispersed yellow brown S-2REL, etc;

4:Used in the spice industry to produce coumarin, bornyl acetate, musk sunflower, cedarwood acetate, phenylethyl acetate, geranyl acetate, etc;

5:Acetyl peroxide, manufactured from acetic anhydride, is an initiator and bleaching agent for polymerization reactions. Used for testing alcohols, aromatic primary amines, and secondary amines;

6:Used in organic synthesis, dyes, pharmaceutical industry, and the manufacturing of acetyl compounds.

7:Used as a solvent and dehydrating agent, as well as an important acetylation reagent and polymer initiator.

8:The final products of application are cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate plastic.

9:It is also a formulation for the production of sleeping pills, neosleeping pills, and methamphetamine.

Acetic anhydride is an irritant and combustible liquid; it is highly corrosive to skin and any direct contact will result in severe burns. Because of its reactivity toward water and alcohol, foam or carbon dioxide are preferred for fire suppression.The vapour of acetic anhydride is harmful.
